The qualification combines theoretical understanding with practical approaches to lesson planning, reflective teaching, classroom management, curriculum design, integrated education and the use of technology in learning.
Learners explore how to plan effective lessons, reflect on teaching practice, manage classroom dynamics, design suitable curricula, respond to diverse learning needs and use technology to support educational outcomes.

Applicants should normally hold a relevant Level 5 Diploma or an equivalent recognised qualification. Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the beginning of the course. Mature learners aged over 21 with management experience may be considered by the delivery centre. Applicants must meet OTHM's English-language competency requirements where applicable. Learners should have appropriate reading, writing, communication and independent-study skills. An interest in teaching, education, curriculum planning or professional development is recommended. Admission is subject to verification of qualifications, experience and the approved centre's current admissions policy.
